Why Data Quality Matters More Than You Think

The Real Cost of Bad Data

This isn’t unique. Bad data quietly leaks into decisions all the time:

  • Duplicates inflate metrics (same customer counted twice = false growth signal)
  • Missing values skew averages (null ages don’t disappear, they become analysis blind spots)
  • Type mismatches break calculations (customer ID as text instead of integer, suddenly math doesn’t work)
  • Stale data misleads strategy (yesterday’s truth, today’s lie)

Each one costs something: time debugging, confidence lost, decisions reversed, team credibility dinged.

Where It Goes Wrong

The pattern is always the same:

  1. Source system produces data (someone else’s problem, right?)
  2. You load it into your analytics database
  3. You write queries and dashboards
  4. Weeks later, someone spots an inconsistency
  5. You trace it back to the source—and realise no one was validating it

By then, that data has already fed 5 reports, justified a business decision, and confused 3 stakeholders.

What I Do Now

Every data project starts with the same question: What could make this data wrong?

Then I build checks:

  • Schema validation — incoming data matches expected types and formats
  • Completeness checks — critical fields aren’t null
  • Range validation — timestamps are reasonable, IDs aren’t negative
  • Duplicate detection — same record isn’t loaded twice
  • Freshness monitoring — alert if data hasn’t updated

This feels like overhead upfront. But it’s insurance against spending weeks on analysis only to discover the foundation is cracked.

The Bottom Line

Data quality isn’t glamorous. It doesn’t make dashboards prettier or analyses more interesting. But every hour spent on validation saves you five hours of debugging, and saves your team’s credibility.

Good data is the difference between a dashboard that’s trusted and a dashboard that’s questioned.

Don’t find out in a board meeting that yours is the latter.
